Q’ero Medicine Wheel: The Process of Shamanic Training

Deep in the Andean mountains of Peru, the Q’ero people, descendants of the ancient Inca, carry a sacred tradition that weaves together nature, spirituality, and healing. At the heart of their teachings is the Q’ero Medicine Wheel, a transformative path of shamanic training designed to align the individual with the natural cycles of life and the spiritual energies of the universe.

This journey is not simply about acquiring knowledge—it’s a deep and profound process of personal healing, energetic cleansing, and awakening to your highest potential. The Medicine Wheel offers a step-by-step framework for moving beyond fear and limitations, becoming a steward of the Earth, and stepping into a life of empowerment, in greater alignment with the essence of the soul.

In this blog, we’ll dive into the Q’ero Medicine Wheel, its unique teachings, and how it serves as a guide for shamanic initiation and personal transformation.

Who Are the Q’ero People?

Luke Receiving a Karpay From Pampameseyoq

The Q’ero people are a remote Indigenous community living high in the Andes Mountains of Peru. They are considered the wisdom keepers of the Inca traditions, preserving a lineage of Paqo shamans (Andean priests or spiritual healers) for centuries. Their teachings are deeply rooted in the harmony of nature, the cosmos, and the sacred energetic exchange known as Ayni (reciprocity).

For the Q’ero, the Medicine Wheel is not a static symbol but a living, evolving path that offers deep healing and connection to Pachamama (Mother Earth), the Apus (mountain spirits), and the universe.

What Is the Q’ero Medicine Wheel?

The medicine wheel is an energetic process that represents the cycle of life and death, making it a profound alchemical process of initiation for it's students. The Q’ero Medicine Wheel was developed by Shaman and Anthropologist, Alberto Villoldo after training in the Andean medicine traditions. The teachings were adapted to the needs of the Western world. The Q'ero Medicine Wheel is a ceremonial map for transformation, teaching practitioners how to heal their wounds, release old energies, and embody their highest self. The process takes participants through the four cardinal directions—South, West, North, and East—each representing a phase of personal and spiritual development.

While the Medicine Wheel is a universal concept seen in many Indigenous cultures, the Q’ero version is unique in its focus on energetic healing, soul alignment, and becoming a Luminous Warrior—someone who lives in alignment with spirit and acts as a steward for life on Earth.

The Four Directions of the Q’ero Medicine Wheel

Each direction of the Q’ero Medicine Wheel corresponds to an animal archetype, specific energies, and a process of inner transformation. Let’s explore the teachings and lessons of each direction:

1. South: The Path of the Serpent (Sach’amama)

  • Symbolism: Shedding the past, releasing fear, and healing the body

  • Element: Fire

  • Archetype: Sach’amama (Serpent) – Represents transformation and grounding

  • Lesson: The South is where the journey begins. Here, you learn to shed the emotional and energetic “skin” of your past, much like a serpent sheds its skin. The serpent’s teachings are about letting go of the stories, traumas, and patterns that keep you stuck. It is in the south direction where you learn to embody the necessary foundations for sustainable practice as a medicine man/woman by learning the arts of non-attachment (detaching from the stories that do not belong to you), non-judgement (using the external world as a mirror for healing & alchemy) and non-suffering (detaching oneself from the responsibility to suffer).

In this phase, you connect deeply with Pachamama (Mother Earth) to heal your body and ground yourself in the present moment. You will receive synchronicities in your daily life that will uproot repressed traumas so that they can be effectively integrated.

2. West: The Path of the Jaguar (Otorongo)

  • Symbolism: Facing the shadow, healing emotions, and embracing courage

  • Element: Water

  • Archetype: Otorongo (Jaguar) – Represents fearlessness and transformation

  • Lesson: In the West, you journey into the realm of the Jaguar, the guardian of the shadow. This phase is about confronting your fears, transforming emotional wounds, and stepping into personal power. The jaguar teaches you to face life’s challenges with courage and grace, releasing the need for control. It is in the West direction where you learn the art of shamanic death, how to die energetically and rise like a phoenix from the ashes. You will learn how to safely alchemise dark matter (energy of the deep unconscious) and utilise it to tap into hidden aspects of your psyche.

Here, you learn to walk with strength and confidence, releasing old fears and embracing the mystery of life. It is the part of the journey where the Shaman really begins to emerge, fully in their power! This stage is also about honouring death—not as an ending, but as a transformation and necessary step in the cycle of rebirth.

3. North: The Path of the Hummingbird (Siwar Q’enti)

  • Symbolism: Connecting with the soul, finding joy, and living your destiny

  • Element: Earth

  • Archetype: Siwar Q’enti (Hummingbird) – Represents resilience, sweetness, and the courage to follow your soul’s path

  • Lesson: The North is the realm of the hummingbird, a tiny but powerful creature that undertakes extraordinary journeys. Here, you learn to connect with your soul’s purpose and the path of joy, sweetness, and resilience. This sounds like a light process but in reality, Hummingbird contains the power of Serpent and Jaguar combined! You will learn how to tap into your soul's essence, whilst you will undertake a deep journey of releasing everything that is encasing it in order to feel safer in the world. You will learn the art of stillness in the midst of the chaos, how to make the impossible possible in your life. Hummingbird is the definition of the divine feminine, forcing the student into a place of needing to cultivate and forge their own path.

In this phase, you release self-doubt and align with your destiny. The hummingbird’s teachings remind you to trust your journey, even when it feels impossible. This is also a time of deep gratitude, where you honour your ancestors and the wisdom they have passed down.

4. East: The Path of the Eagle (Kuntur)

  • Symbolism: Vision, clarity, and stepping into your highest self

  • Element: Air

  • Archetype: Apu Chin (Eagle/Condor) – Represents spiritual vision and the ability to see the bigger picture

  • Lesson: In the East, you step into the wisdom of the eagle, soaring high above the world and seeing life from a new perspective. The eagle teaches you to embody your highest self and live a life of vision and purpose.

This phase is about spiritual awakening and aligning your actions with divine will. You learn to “dream your world into being,” understanding that you are a co-creator of your reality. The East is also where you step into your role as a Luminous Warrior, carrying the lessons of the Medicine Wheel forward to help others.

The Medicine Wheel Never Ends

If you are seeking an end point, this type of Shamanic training will not give you this, simply because healing is an ongoing process! The medicine wheel is about embarking on a continuous process of death and rebirth that will never truly end! Everything in the nature and the cosmos will undergo a constant process that mirrors that of pure awareness - creation, experience, death, rebirth. Upon completion of the East direction, you will crash back into the South direction and will undergo the process again, this time tapping into even deeper layers than before. Moving back into the natural flow of creation is what the soul has come here to do!

Shamanic Training and Initiation in the Q’ero Medicine Wheel

The Q’ero Medicine Wheel is not just a philosophical journey—it’s a hands-on process of shamanic training and initiation that extends over multiple years. As you walk the Wheel, you engage in practices that deepen your connection to spirit, heal your energy body, and awaken your inner power.

1. Energy Healing and Cleansing

One of the central aspects of Q’ero shamanism is the practice of energy healing. Through rituals such as Karpay (rites of energetic initiation) and working with Sacred Stones (Khuyas), you cleanse your luminous energy field of heavy energy (Hucha) and align with higher vibrations.

Practices like breathwork, visualisation, and despacho ceremonies (offerings to Pachamama) are also used to restore harmony within yourself and with the world around you.

2. Working with Spirit Guides and Archetypes

As you move through the Medicine Wheel, you connect with the animal archetypes—Serpent, Jaguar, Hummingbird, and Eagle—and other spiritual allies such as the Apus (mountain spirits) and Pachamama. These guides offer protection, wisdom, and support as you navigate the challenges of the journey.

3. Facing the Shadow

The Q’ero Medicine Wheel emphasizes the importance of shadow work, especially in the West. By confronting your fears, traumas, and limiting beliefs, you reclaim the power you’ve given away and integrate the lessons of your past. This process allows you to move forward with clarity and strength.

4. Becoming a Luminous Warrior

The ultimate goal of the Q’ero Medicine Wheel is to become a Luminous Warrior—someone who walks the Earth with integrity, courage, and compassion. This means living in harmony with nature, embodying spiritual wisdom, and acting as a healer and guide for others.

How to Begin Your Journey with the Q’ero Medicine Wheel

As you move through the medicine wheel, you are going to change thoroughly. You will make significant strides in your healing and evolution whilst experiencing significant efflorescence of character and values. It is important that you are open and ready to undergo these significant changes as the process will set you up for a much broader set of practices and journeys of evolution. You must be willing to face the hidden aspects of yourself and be willing to shed the layers of your coping mechanisms in order to get the most out of this journey. You must be willing to let go of the things in your life that are shackling your soul - this could be toxic relationships, trauma bonds, jobs, friendship groups and many others. For each person, it is going to be a different process.

It is important that you start with my Foundation Course Into Shamanism as this will introduce you to the energies that you will be working with so that you can get a feel for them, alongside the specific practices. The course is one-to-one, online and can be completed within the space of a few months in order to prepare you for the full process.

Upon completion of the Foundation Course Into Shamanism, you will be ready to move onto the Q'ero Medicine Wheel Shamanic Training which is a much longer and deeper process of initiation, whereby you will receive the deeper teachings, rites of passage and healing tools to build your practice as a Shamanic Practitioner. This can be completed in-person, in small training groups or online as 1-2-1.

Tips For Connecting With The Medicine Wheel

You don’t need to do the course to begin working with the Q’ero Medicine Wheel.

Here are some ways to incorporate its teachings into your life as a starting point:

1. Meditate with the Directions

Create a sacred space and meditate on each direction. Reflect on its energies, the associated animal archetype, and how its lessons apply to your life.

2. Practice Ayni (Sacred Reciprocity)

Live in harmony with nature and others by practicing Ayni, the principle of giving and receiving. Offer gratitude to the Earth through rituals, such as planting a tree or creating an offering of natural materials.

3. Seek Guidance from a Shamanic Practitioner

If possible, work with a Q’ero-trained shamanic practitioner or attend a Medicine Wheel workshop to receive guidance and initiation into this sacred path.

4. Perform a Despacho Ceremony

Create a ceremonial offering to Pachamama, symbolising your intentions and gratitude. This ritual is central to Q’ero shamanism and helps align your energy with the cycles of nature.
